About Fuengirola on The Costa del Sol

Fuengirola is quite a large town and if explored in a relaxed fashion, could yield some surprisingly good results, as there are plenty of quality shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, and a nice beach and marina. Getting to Fuengirola is easy, especially if you use the train or bus.

Both terminals are close together and only a short distance from the heart of Fuengirola. Although not in anyway a dangerous area, the bus terminal needs a little vigilance, due to a few drunks hanging about, as well as lots of Timeshare touts with their "winning" scratch cards.

There are some good shops to visit during your trip to town, especially if you like shoes. There is also a Dunnes, which is the Spanish arm of M & S. If you would prefer all your shops in one building and you want to try the Mall experience, take a yellow bus marked "Miramar Centro".

The trip takes about ten minutes and stops outside. This is supposed to be their idea of the American shopping Mall but really doesn't hit the mark, although there is a decent sports shop, record shop and a hugh Eroski supermarket on the ground floor. Go upstairs to find a wide range of food outlets as well as a multiplex cinema showing new releases, none of which seem to be in English.

Fuengirola is well known for it's weekly markets, with the largest on the coast happening at the Feria ground every Tuesday. There are over 1800 stalls selling everything and anything. On Saturdays at the same location, there is a car boot sale. As with all markets you visit, keep one hand on your wallet!

After the shopping experience, head towards the paseo and the beach area, where you will find a large harbour/marina which is split into sections, including where the fishing fleet comes in with their catch, boat building and a repair yard. The actual marina is very pretty and has a selection of expensive power and sail boats, along with ship's chandlers, selling all types of nautical equipment.

Also in this part of the marina, you will find a shop that will give you instructions in using either jet skis or power boats and is linked to the RYA. You will need this proficiency certificate should you wish to rent whilst on your holiday and is valid all around the World. Just remember to take the certificate with you.

Very close to the water's edge at the marina, you will find some rather nice cafes and restaurants. We can certainly recommend the German Ku Damm, with it's Bavarian menu and beer, along with the aptly named La Belle Vista which serves a good breakfast for about 4 euros. A great place to watch the boats and dream of winning the Lottery.

Because of the International tourists that visit Fuengirola during the year, there are a great many restaurants serving just about anything you can think of, especially if you like seafood and fish. Try the street called "Fish Ally" for a reasonable selection of quality dishes. If fish is not what you fancy, you can go Japanese, Indian, English etc.

About Los Boliches in Fuengirola

Los Boliches first came to prominence in the 18th century, when it was a major supplier of foods and provisions for merchant sailing boats. The actual word "Boliche" means Grocer. These days it is better known as a superb of Fuengirola, which is about 15 minutes walking distance away.

Los Boliches has an excellent wide sandy beach, a great tree lined Paseo and numerous classy cafes and bars, most with a wonderful view of the distant Sierra Navada mountain range. It is a place with a good atmosphere and a charm of it`s own.

In between the main road that runs to Fuengirola and the Paseo on the sea front, there are many small roads and lanes, where you can find some unexpectedly high quality bars, cafes and restaurants. We can recommend the orientally designed Zen Bar for it´s fantastic minimalistic interior and various foods from The Far East, along with Cafe Manana which is to be found on the Paseo. If it is a spot of Karaoke that you desire, then we feel Rusty`s and The Bar on The Square will hit the mark.

At night when the small street lamps are lit, along with various neons from the bars, make these lanes somewhat like Amsterdam, minus the somewhat dubious side of that City. If you fancy staying in Los Boliches there are some decent quality hotels, some on the sea front, as well as plenty of apartment blocks. The train station at Los Boliches is only one stop from the end of the line, Fuengirola. Outside the station after the walk down some steep stairs, you will find El Carte Ingles and Super Cor. Certainly well worth a visit ad a good browse around, with them selling some decent clothing for both adults and children, an excellent cosmetic department and of course the food shop. We think that Los Boliches is a nice safe place to visit, without too much fear of getting lost, even when you are not too sure where the lanes will take you.
